  • In the recent decade, cannabis has been made more legal and accessible for medical and recreational usage
    • “We are now part of the resurgence, the renaissance of this ancient crop”Stephen Smith
  • Hemp can be used in bioplastics, seeds for flour, insulation, medicine and more
    • “I think we’re just literally, just totally scratching the surface” – Stephen Smith
  • If it’s under .3% THC, the government labels it as hemp, anything over is labeled cannabis
  • Since you can get in legal trouble for growing anything over the .3% limit, growers often burn plants that test past the limit
  • Low level farming involves uses a lot of plastics, fertilizer, and other materials to feed the soil:
    • Some farmers use plastic mulch to suppress weeds. Since plastic is made out of oil it can affect the health of the soil and increases a farmer’s carbon footprint
      • “It’s on an IV and it’s being fed nutrients directly” – Stephen Smith
  • High level farming or biodynamic farming, is when the farm is in balance with nature and you don’t need to depend on herbicides, pesticides, or other artificial products. Instead, you use manure, compost, and rotate crops.
    • “Biodynamic farming is the highest organic standard” – Stephen Smith
      • It’s when you treat the farm as an ecosystem: You plant crops, but you also plant flowers and different vegetables. On one of Stephen’s farm, only 10% of the crop is hemp.
  • The 3 main issues hemp addresses are anxiety, inflammation, and sleep issues:
    • Consuming cannabis supports the function of your endocannabinoid system which helps you manage stress and anxiety better, sleep better, and also decreases inflammation

Becoming A Farmer

  • Stephen worked in the restaurant business in college. He saved up some money and went to live in South America for a few months.
    • He fell in love grape growing and then got an internship at Napa Valley
      • He then went to work for large-scale vineyards and ranches where he learned about biodynamic farming
  • Permaculture is about designing a system based on use, biodiversity, and flow of the landscape to maximize the highest yield and following companion planting
    • Companion planting is when you plant different crops next to each other. Benefits include pest control, pollination, providing habitat for beneficial insects, maximizing use of space, and increasing crop productivity.
  • Companion planting often leads lower yields than monocropping but it doesn’t deplete the soil as much:
    • “Feed the soil first, build something up for the long haul” – Stephen Smith
  • Stephen’s mission: “Heal the people, empower our farmers, and support the regeneration of the Earth”
  • If you want to start farming, Stephen recommends looking at permaculture systems, find consultants, and be ready to do a lot of work
    • You don’t need to have a huge farm to get into farming. Start with your backyard or pot some vegetables in a pot on your balcony.

The Various Uses of Hemp

  • Cannabis has been carbon dated and has existed longer than modern humans
  • Cannabis was used medicinally back in the 1800s
    • Commercial interests of big paper entities pushed propaganda about cannabis that eventually made it outlawed in the 1920s and then made illegal in the controlled substance act in the 1970s

    • Rules are constantly being broken and changed

Growing Naturally vs. Artificially

  • Weed grown artificially in warehouses tends to have much higher levels of THC
    • But it costs a lot more per pound to grow
  • The margins on farming are slim and the the supply and demand of crop changes every season
  • Once the hemp leaves the farm, it’s ground up into fine pieces. From there, it can be processed in several ways:
    • It can be stripped down into single molecules to become isolate, which is very heavily processed and used for specific products (ex:CBD soda)
    • There’s the broad spectrum route which is when you use alcohol or CO2. As a result you can separate the THC, chlorophyll, and polyphenols from the hemp.
    • Stephen follows an infusion process where he soaks the hemp in oil.
      • “It’s low-tech, high efficacy…that tends to yield a beautiful green terpene-rich product” – Stephen Smith

Thoughts on Plant Medicine

  • The 3 main issues hemp addresses are anxiety, inflammation, and sleep issues:
    • Consuming cannabis supports the function of your endocannabinoid system which helps you manage stress and anxiety better, sleep better, and also decreases inflammation
  • Putting topical CBD on your skin can help treat sunburn and poison ivy
  • There’s still a lot we don’t know about the benefits of CBD
    • Researchers are currently looking at the possibility of treating certain cancers with high doses of CBD
      • “There’s a lot more to explore in this realm” – Stephen Smith
  • Some people are experimenting with juicing hemp and adding it to juice as if it were a wheatgrass shot
