Intro

  • Akira The Don (@akirathedon) is a musician, DJ, and creator of MEANINGWAVE, a streaming service that samples voices of podcasters, philosophers, and entrepreneurs into songs. Danny and Akira The Don discuss how passion and perspective are the key to identifying the next big cultural & technological wave.
  • Host: Danny Miranda (@heydannymiranda)

Akira The Don Early Life

  • Growing up around Wales (UK), the day after his 16th birthday he chose to leave home and to fend for himself
    • He lived in a tent in the woods while attending school in a near town. He hitchhiked into town daily
    • Would take milk and cheese off of people’s doorsteps
  • Always had the dream of making music
  • Religiously read music magazines. He realized nobody made it in the music industry purely on talent. You had to know someone, so he went out to try and meet people.
    • Decided to try and become a music journalist to get involved in the London music industry
    • Stayed with some junkies in a run-down house; they were all very excited about his potential and gave Akira the ‘cleanest’ mattress (the one without lice)
    • Lied about his resume to get his first journalist job – they didn’t really have the technology to validate your credentials
    • Created his own magazine, Fanzine, so he could get into gigs and meet musicians
    • Wrote a column about all the behind-the-scenes stuff that happened at gigs, always put his music at the bottom of the column
    • Eventually got a record deal after popularizing his name within the industry
  • Akira always had a plan:
    • Reversed engineered his goal – set up systems that carried him towards his aim
    • Thoughts become things – everything he read, he manifested the information into his life

Innovation

  • Humans are naturally curious about how tools can be beneficial to their lives
    • When the internet appeared, Akira didn’t think about it, he just experimented with it
  • We are rarely shocked by innovation anymore; we adapt incredibly fast to technological advances
    • “If there was a zombie outbreak tomorrow, we’d have a whole new system worked out by Monday and we’d all be comfortable with it” – Akira The Don
  • Steam/Stream Theory – the rate at which more things are created in less time
    • Stream – where we can incrementally see and recognize the technological advances in culture
    • Steam – radical innovations are happening so quickly that we are often not surprised by them or don’t even notice them, natural assimilation
      • The Pentagon confirmed the existence of UFOs this year and it went fairly under the radar, our ‘surprise meter’ has been dulled by the excess and ease of information

Trends and MEANINGWAVE

  • Akira The Don has found that a lot of his big ideas came too early before the audience was ready to popularize them
    • He claims he was doing ‘sad boy’ rap far before artists like Lil Peep
    • Was doing ‘triplet rhyming’ 15 years before the Migos popularized it
    • Was doing EDM vocal mashups about 5 years too early
    • Had the first online mixtape far before Ghostface
      • Always abandoned ideas too early, before having the chance to profit in the mainstream
  • Quadruple down on what’s working for you currently
    • Right now for Akira The Don, it’s MEANINGWAVE‘MEANING is the WAVE
      • Songs using samples of dialogue from podcasters, philosophers, entrepreneurs, and more
        • Chooses his samples off of feel, not thought. You never know who’s perspective is going to dramatically alter your own understanding of truth.
        • “Synchronicities are our signposts. The more you notice, the more you see” – Akira The Don
  • He is very interested in Augmented Reality
    • He could see AR narratives being mapped onto the real world
      • Akira sees his kids emulate their real interests and personalities within their characters in Roblox and Minecraft

NFTs and Internet Evolution

  • Blockchain reverts back to some original ideas of the internet that got killed off
    • You make money on subscriptions rather than advertising
    • You used to own your own website, not operate under a provider
      • “The internet all started to look the same. All the individual expression was gone. Individualized data and blogs became Facebook and Twitter posts. It became a communist and authoritarian like nightmare-scape in a weird way” – Akira The Don
      • Crypto and NFTs re-empower communities to have space to participate and express themselves freely

The Next Wave

  • Akira The Don is always looking at the past and different cycles to predict future trends to maximize his safety and fiscal opportunities
  • Akira The Don claims we are approaching what he calls the Neo-Psychedelic Sci-Fi Age
    • All the sci-fi stuff in the movies are quickly appearing and assimilating into reality
    • “We are at the point in the game where we have to dream up the new shit” – Akira The Don
  • People/companies who were born after the internet survived the negative business implications from Covid-19 better than those born before
    • It’s important to stay in touch with culture, you never know how the value will come to fruition
  • “All of life’s unnecessary pain & suffering only exists from people living outside of the moment” – Akira The Don
    • Your challenges are your adventures and your journey, life’s truly magical when you have the perspective that all of this is building into one great story
