Rich’s New Revised and Updated Finding ultra
  • The book is about how to become the best, most authentic version of yourself
    • “When your heart is true, the universe will conspire to support you”
Tough Times
  • Rich used to be a lawyer, was 50 pounds over weight, and addicted to junk food
  • After ending his career in law and writing Finding Ultra, several difficult things happened
    • He went through some marriage problems
      • Everything is fine now, but Rich says “We really had to burn in that fire in order to come out.”
    • 2 of his cars were repossessed
    • “There were many times where I thought I should go back and be a lawyer”
      • Everyone goes through challenging times
    • “Emerging from these challenges allows me to communicate with my listeners with a level of humility, honesty, and realness, because I know what it’s like to go through hard times” 
Rich’s Podcast – What is he most proud of?
  • Rich is a Podcast Notes’ favorite and puts out amazing interviews, check out some of the notes from his show
  • “I know in my heart of hearts that I have shaped and impacted the way people live their lives”
  • Rich had been experiencing a little bit of burn out back in December
    • To combat this, he’s gotten better at delegating certain tasks, and focusing more on the tasks that are most important to him
    • He’s also gotten better at batching his work
  • “I’ll do the podcast as long as I feel like I’m adding value and I’m into it”
    • Rich has released an episode every single week since starting it in November 2012
How can I create the most impact?
  • This is something Rich always asks himself, and guides much of his work
  • After asking this question, when he turned 50 (he’s 51 now), Rich decided it would be a good idea to do an ultra endurance race, called Otillo, in Sweeden
    • He wanted to prove that a 50 year old vegan could still go out and succeed
    • “The best part of it was I got to share the whole experience with everyone who follows me”
The Benefit of Challenges
  • “I think you always need a challenge in life. When I’m committed to a challenge., it gives my life structure and focus and allows me to prioritize where I’m spending my attention. Even though there’s a huge time commitment, I tend to be more productive in everything else I’m doing”
  • When we have more on our plate, we’re forced to be much more organized with our time and create boundaries of what we agree and don’t agree to do
  • For Rich, long ultra endurance races are spiritual odysseys
    • “When you train for these crazy long races, you’re stripped down to your core. It’s almost like a Ayahuasca trip. The outer shell we walk around with disappears, and you’re confronted with yourself in a really profound way.”
  • Lewis – “When you stop experiencing pain, you become complacent in life”
    • Lewis tries to do something every day that’s painful (like waking up at 5:30am and working out)
Where should someone get started if they’re looking to improve their life?
  • Rich says start with your diet
    • “Changing your plate, and cleaning up what you’re putting into your body, is a portal to the soul”
    • Eat real foods as close to their natural state as possible – Rich eats 100% plant-based

    • Eat mostly fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes
    • Changing your diet serves as a catalyst for progressive growth in other areas

  • Good food improves our physical makeup
  • “If you’re going to eat meat, at least don’t eat dairy”
  • There’s a lot of conflicting information out there, but everyone agrees that a diet high in fiber, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds is the path forward
  • Rich is a recovering alcoholic, and got sober around age 31
  • “Alcoholism undermined every aspect of who I was, and stripped away all my ambitions and potential”
    • He got 2 DUIs during his 20s
  • One day, Rich just knew he couldn’t go on living like that
    • He went to a treatment center in Oregon, and ended up staying there for 100 days
  • To heal – Rich took the compulsive and addictive energy he once applied to alcoholism, and applied it to his work
What has being a recovering addict taught Rich about compassion for others?
  • He’s come to understand we’re all going through something and have our own pain
  • “Whether you’re an addict or not, we’re all walking around with our masks on, and it’s easy to assume everyone else has it better. You don’t know what people are going through.”
What lessons does Rich try to teach his kids?
  • Find something you care about and excites you
    • “That’s the engine that propels an individual towards success later in life”
  • “Find what’s true to your heart, and pursue it with everything you have”
What’s the biggest challenge Rich is facing right now?
  • Learning how to say no
  • It’s important not to use the opportunities that come your way as distractions from what you should really be focused on
