Key Takeaways

  • Mobility work makes a huge difference:
    • Do 10 deep squats, then do 20-30 minutes of mobility exercise, then do another 10 deep squats and you’ll see a big difference in your hip depth
  • If a kid can’t do an exercise with good movement and stability, don’t make them do that exercise
  • What’s the best cardio machine? It depends:
    • The treadmill is the most versatile option, it’s easy to do low-intensity workouts and multitask like reading while walking
    • An elliptical is the lowest-impact and healthiest for people with joint-pain
    • An assault bike and rowing machine are great for high-intensity, but it’s for more experienced athletes
      • “At the end of the day, the one you feel most comfortable with is probably going to be fine” – Sal Di Stefano

COVID-19 Thoughts

  • “This is the only time in history that somebody could walk in with a full mask on their face and kitchen rubber gloves and you wouldn’t even bat an eye” – Adam Schafer
    • Which makes it a prime opportunity for criminals
  • If states need more tax dollars, Adam suggests they  should decriminalize marijuana
    • Only 9 states have legalized recreational use of marijuana
      • California earned $1 billion in revenue after 2 years of legalizing cannabis
        • Many of the legalized cannabis distributors in California have run out of product
  • Dr. Fauci has recommended people to stop shaking hands to limit the spread of COVID-19
  • Infectious disease experts are puzzled as to why California, a densely populated state, has such low infection and death rates
    • New York’s COVID-19 infection and mortality rate is nearly 10x that of California
  • Several CEOs are giving away their salaries to help pay their employees
    • Jack Dorsey donated $1 billion, that is 32% of his net worth

Mobility & Ancient Athletes

  • Mobility work makes a huge difference:
    • Do 10 deep squats, then do 20-30 minutes of mobility exercise, then do another 10 deep squats and you’ll see a big difference in your hip depth
  • The best ancient sports stars weren’t much better than modern Olympians
    • Chionis of Sparta at the 656 B.C. games would have won first place for long jump in the 1896 Olympics and in the top 10 finishers in the 1952 Olympic games

What’s the best cardio machine?

  • It depends:
    • The treadmill is the most versatile option, it’s easy to do low-intensity workouts and multitask like reading while walking
    • An elliptical is the lowest-impact and healthiest for people with joint pain
    • An assault bike and rowing machine are great for high-intensity, but it’s for more experienced athletes
      • “At the end of the day, the one you feel most comfortable with is probably going to be fine” – Sal Di Stefano
        • All machines help strengthen your cardiovascular system

What should you do if you have bad form?

  • Focus on correctional exercises and mobility
    • If you don’t have proper form, the chances of you getting injured go up and the chances of you building muscle goes down
      • “Start with mobility that is his workout right now for sure” – Sal Di Stefano

Fitness Tests

  • Fitness tests are very specific
    • Just because you’re good at running, it doesn’t mean you’re good at lifting weights
  • As a general rule of thumb: If you can bench, squat, and deadlift your body weight you’re relatively strong
  • You should also be able to play and run with your kids without being out of breath

Workout Advice For Kids

  • Check to see if a kid can do an exercise with good movement and stability. If they can’t, don’t make them do that exercise
  • Try to create exercises that feel fun and playful for kids
  • Put together a series of exercises (push-up, lunges, sit-ups) test your kid to see how many they can do and then try to have them beat their record the next time
    • If they beat it, reward them with positive compliments, snacks, iPad time, or something else they like
  • While exercising with your kids, use the time to also get to know them (E.g., Ask them what superpower they wished they had and why)
