Robot Cancer: What Bioelectrics Of Embryogenesis And Regeneration Teach Us About Unconventional Computing, Cognition, And The Software Of Life | Michael Levin Keynote Address at ALIFE 2020

Key Takeaways

  • The body demonstrates incredible plasticity
  • “Individual components of a biological system are goal-directed” – Mike Levin
  • We can exploit the physics of bioelectricity to implement networks that store patterns which serve as anatomical memories and goal states
  • Embryogenesis is reliable but not hardwired so it can be guided towards a specific outcome
  • The body has a large-scale body plan/anatomical set point which overrides individual cell states
  • “It’s clear we don’t fully understand the relationship between the genome and anatomy” – Mike Levin

Introduction

Dr. Michael Levin is Professor and Vannevar Bush Endowed Chair in the Department of Biology at Tufts University. He is also director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts and director of the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology and a visiting scholar at the Wyss Institute at Harvard.

In this Keynote Address at the ALIFE 2020 Conference, Dr. Levin details the competency of biological systems and their local goals and discusses how understanding anatomical decisions could lead to the top-down design of living form.
