Lex Fridman (#1537) on the Joe Rogan Experience

Key Takeaways

  • “Bees make honey. What do people do? They make technology.” Joe Rogan
    • Humans are innovative but also materialistic. It’s a cycle: People want the newest and greatest thing so other people work to invent that new thing. And then people buy that newest thing.
      • “It drives commerce and commerce drives innovation.”
  • Technology grows exponentially. So while some people believe Neuralink is anywhere from 100-300 years away, Lex believes it could be as soon as 30-50 years away:
    • “The way things are accelerating is very possible that it’s 50 years away, 30 years away” – Lex Fridman
  • The stimulus package seemed to help the upper class more than the middle or lower class and is widening the wealth inequality gap in the US
    • “The way the stimulus is being distributed…is that it creates a greater gap in wealth disparity” – Lex Fridman
  • Poverty and pain can easily create a revolution:
    • “People have lost their savings. People have lost their dreams. That materializes itself just like it did in Germany in bitterness and hatred. And that can create revolutions.” – Lex Fridman
  • Joe believes the government is slowly releasing information about UFOs to prepare people for alien life:
    • “My speculation is they are slowly spoon-feeding us information to allow people to be more comfortable with the inevitable arrival of something” – Joe Rogan
  • Joe’s northstar when it comes to the podcast:
    • “My intentions are to try to get out of the way as much as possible, put together the best podcast I can…Try to feed my curiosity, just do my best.” – Joe Rogan
  • Although the vast majority of comments on Joe’s podcasts are positive, he stopped looking at them because as humans, we dwell on the negative comments more:
    • “The vast majority of interactions that I had online even before I stopped reading comments were positive. The problem is you start dwelling on the ones that aren’t.”Joe Rogan

Intro

The US Is Struggling

  • The stimulus package seemed to help the upper class more than the middle or lower class and is widening the wealth inequality gap in the US
    • “The way the stimulus is being distributed…is that it creates a greater gap in wealth disparity” – Lex Fridman
      • “People who are not well off are going to become worse”
  • The people in the US who are experiencing the most pain during this pandemic aren’t being heard because they don’t have a podcast or large social media following to express themselves
  • Poverty and pain can easily create a revolution:
    • “People have lost their savings. People have lost their dreams. That materializes itself just like it did in Germany in bitterness and hatred. And that can create revolutions.” – Lex Fridman

UFOs Are Real

  • Earlier this year the Pentagon released information confirming they have seen and found UFOs
    • One report of a UFO sighting states that the object went from 60,000 feet to almost ground level in seconds
  • Joe believes the government is slowly releasing information about UFOs to prepare people for alien life:
    • “My speculation is they are slowly spoon-feeding us information to allow people to be more comfortable with the inevitable arrival of something” – Joe Rogan
      • By sharing the information gradually, the government decreases the chances of mass panic and chaos
  • Lex stance is that people should be inspired by alien life, not fearful of it:
    • “There’s nothing more inspiring to us humans than that there’s life out there, intelligent life out there” Lex Fridman

Trump & Biden Debate?

  • Joe and Lex would love to see Donald Trump and Joe Biden debate on Joe’s podcast
    • Imagine a four-hour debate that let them answer questions in detail and with no audience cheering for either side
      • Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Joe Biden’s team will let him do it because he isn’t as great of a speaker as Donald Trump
  • Presidential debates have turned from talking about what one would do as president to trashing other candidates:
    • “It’s about tearing the other people down. It’s not about what you can do, what you want to do…It’s about how bad that other person is going to do with the job.”Joe Rogan

Humans Are Born To Make Technology

  • New technology starts off slow and expensive but it quickly becomes fast and affordable
    • When Joe first saw a plasma TV in 1995 it cost $20,000. Today you can get 4K flat TV for a few hundred dollars.
    • The first iPhone came out in 2007 and it looked terrible. Today, the iPhone 11 is infinitely better and has so many more incredible features.
      • Advanced technology may seem scary, but by the time it happens, we’ll take it for granted. No one today is impressed by an iPhone today because it’s so common and widely available, yet it’s an incredible piece of technology. The same will be true of Neuralink in the future.
  • As humans get more advanced and technology integrates deeper into our lives, the line between biology and technology will blur

Thoughts on Texas & California

  •  Joe’s goals for moving to Texas:
    • Set up the podcast studio
    • Open a comedy store
    • Start a ranch
  • Joe is considering doing a weekly podcast with Duncan Trussell
  • Joe has no plans to going back to Los Angelos anytime soon:
    • “The mayor is f*cked and the governor is f*cked and they’ve done a terrible job of managing the pandemic and the place is in ruins. LA’s a mess.” – Joe Rogan
      • San Franciso is also witnessing an exodus of people:
        • “They said that people are fleeing San Francisco” – Lex Fridman

BJJ Isn’t As Violent As You Think

  • Joe and Lex are both huge fans of BJJ
    • Although it may seem like a violent sport, there’s a lot of love to it:
      • “There’s so much friendship and love in jiu-jitsu” – Joe Rogan
        • After you finish rolling with someone, you thank them and hug it out
          • “Jiu-jitsu is a very friendly culture”

David Goggins & Pushing Your Body

  • Lex took up David Goggins’s 4/4/48 challenge: Run 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours
    • Lex completed the challenge but wouldn’t encourage others to try it:
      • “That was the worst idea ever. I don’t recommend that.” – Lex Fridman
        • One of the biggest obstacles to the challenge is the mental aspect of it:
          • “Your mind starts making stuff up like why are you doing this”
  • Another challenge Lex completed: 500 push-ups, 170 pull-ups, and 6 miles of running every day for a month
    • Lex had to stop it after 10 days because of a shoulder injury
  • The philosophy of David Goggins isn’t to get in shape, it’s to push your mind and body beyond what you think is possible:
    • “The point is to push the limits of what is healthy” – Lex Fridman
  • When it comes to replenishing your body, Lex and Joe both use Athletic Greens
    • Joe also recommends Liquid IV
      • “Once I started using it I stopped getting cramps” – Joe Rogan

Podcasting & Negative Comments

  • Joe’s northstar when it comes to the podcast:
    • “My intentions are to try to get out of the way as much as possible, put together the best podcast I can…Try to feed my curiosity, just do my best.” – Joe Rogan
  • Although the vast majority of comments on Joe’s podcasts are positive, he stopped looking at them because as humans, we dwell on the negative comments more:
    • “The vast majority of interactions that I had online even before I stopped reading comments were positive. The problem is you start dwelling on the ones that aren’t.”Joe Rogan
      • Successful people tend to be busy and not spend their time writing negative comments. Those types of messages tend to come from people who have unrealized potential and aren’t doing well.
        • “A lot of times that toxicity is coming out of a lot of other flaws in their life”
  • Lex is trying to build an AI system that helps people have thoughtful interactions and pushes positive comments up instead of negatives one

Neuralink’s Recent Event

  • Lex attended the recent Neuralink event that showed a neuralink had been implanted in a pig
    • The neuralink had 1,024 channels which measured the signals from the neurons that connect to the brain
      • “That’s a lot more than any other device has ever done” – Lex Fridman
        • This is only the beginning. Think of this as the first plasma TV, there’s a lot of room for important.
          • Neuralink may even replace the biological brain one day in the future

Additional Notes

  • Joe named his podcast the Joe Rogan Experience after the Jimi Hendrix Experience
  • Some comedians have tried to do stand-up via Zoom but it’s not the same experience
    • “You have to have an audience. It’s one of those art forms that you need to have a reaction. The people have to be there. You feed off of them. You create comedy with them.” – Joe Rogan
  • Joe and Lex both agree that defunding the police isn’t a good solution. Instead, police need more funding so that they get better training.
  • Most of the population growth in the 21st century will be in Africa
    • “Africa will have, I believe more people than the rest of the world by like the end of the century if the population continues” – Lex Fridman
  • Lex recently changed his podcast name to the Lex Fridman podcast
  • The modern-day war is interesting because although countries have incredibly powerful weapons like nukes, both sides agree not to use it
  • Eric Weinstein and Stephen Wolfram are both working on a theory of everything
    • Eric talked more about this theory on his last appearance on Joe’s podcast
    • Stephen designed the alien language in the movie Arrival
  • “As long as it’s consensual, I would love to fight to the death for the ideas I believe in” – Lex Fridman
  • Cancel Culture has had both a positive and negative impact:
    • It started the MeToo movement which put many sexual predators behind bars, but it also wrongly accused dozens of people
  • When it comes to diet, listen to your body. Everyone is different.
    • For example, Lex prefers to eat only once a day
  • “The finiteness of life kind of makes life worth living” – Lex Fridman
  • “In order to really appreciate the light, you got to experience the darkness” – Joe Rogan
