Intro

Problems with Mainstream Media & Communication

  • Because many things vie for our attention today, even mainstream media sources have resorted to outrage and click-bait articles in an attempt to get more views
    • Joe says that even NYT has gone “social justice warrior and click-baity”
      • “What do they set up that headline for, it’s to outrage people” – Jocko Willink
  • “The vast majority of problems would be solved amongst reasonably people if they just talked it through” – Joe Rogan
    • “The way we exchange information with each other back and forth through social media represents the worst way people can talk. You’re not looking at each other. You don’t get any social cues. You don’t feel any empathy towards that person.”
      • People didn’t evolve to talk to others through email or social media. That’s why a ton of miscommunication happens with online communication.
        • COVID stripped people of in-person communication and made communication even more difficult

Thoughts on Defunding the Police

  • Jocko and Joe both believe police officers should be allowed to use chokeholds to gain control over someone because it’s safer than hitting the person in the head with a baton
  • “You know what the police need more than anything else? They need money for training.” Jocko Willink
    • Police do a tiny amount of training for such a serious, high-pressure job
      • Navy SEALs would train for 18 months for a deployment
      • Cops get about 4 hours of combative training a year
        • Jocko believes cops should be spending a fifth of their time training or one day a week just for training (combat simulation, de-escalation drills, etc.)
  • “Being a cop is I think the hardest job in the world” – Jocko Willink
    • You only get 3 months of training and then you’re set out into the street
      • “We put these people in these horrible positions over and over and over again, and we don’t give them the proper training”
  • “If we want to help the police through these situations, we need to invest more money into them, we need to get them better training, we need to pull them out of the field to train and pull them out of the field to decompress” Jocko Willink
  • Jocko and Joe would both love for police officers to gain experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and be purple belts so they can handle people without excessive force
    • “The amount of confidence and mental clarity that cops would have if every cop were a purple belt, it would be amazing” – Jocko Willink

Leadership Can Be Learned

  • Leadership is a skill, people can get better at it but they need the right type of training
    • “There are actual moves that you can do as a leader that are just like a jiu-jit-su move” – Jocko Willink
      • “The more of them you learn, the better off you’ll be”
        • You also need to practice leadership to get better at it
  • “You can become a much, much better leader over time”Jocko Willink
  • Communication is a huge part of solving problems as a leader
    • “If you and I are fighting, you and I are not finding the solution” – Jocko Willink

Proper Leadership

  • When there’s a major problem, the leader of the organization should go to ground zero and figure out what’s happening and talk to people on the front-lines
  • The best leaders involve other people in the planning process. Why? Because no one has all of the answers.
  • Great leaders:
    • Don’t let their ego get in the way of a good solution
    • Change their minds when they’re presented with valid, new evidence that supports a different solution
    • Are okay with saying “I don’t know”
    • Tell people the truth with what’s happening

The US Needs More Factories

  • In America, the middle-class is shrinking while the middle-class in China is growing
  • Working in a factory and producing products with your hand is a skilled craft and an honest way to make a living
    • The US needs more factories so that it’s not as reliant on other countries for all of their goods
    • “Capturing this knowledge so that we can become a self-sufficient country again, it’s got to be paramount in what we’re doing” – Jocko Willink
      • Factories also provide much needed middle-class jobs to Americans
        • When young kids can’t get a job, they sell drugs, commit crimes, and other societally undesirable acts
  • It’s not impossible to build a successful company in the US that relies on manufacturing: Look at Elon Musk and his companies like Tesla and SpaceX

Thoughts on COVID

  • Jocko thinks he may have caught COVID in February
  • COVID exposed weaknesses in businesses and people’s health
    • 70% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D
      • The government isn’t telling people that boosting their immune system can help combat COVID
        • Eat healthy, drink water, exercise, get sunlight if you can or take Vitamin D supplements
  • Our leaders didn’t do a good job of handling COVID
    • They lied about masks not working when they did
  • Older people should’ve been quarantined for their health and safety but younger people could’ve continued to work and kept the economy alive

The Rock 2020

  • Joe and Jocko are both worried about Joe Biden’s health and his mental ability to handle the pressure of being president
  • Jocko and Joe would both love to see Dwayne Johnson be the President of the United States
    • “I think he would have to run as an independent and I recommend he does it right now” – Jocko Willink
      • “I think he would win” – Joe Rogan
  • Why the Rock?
    • He’s smart
    • He’s articulate
    • He listens to people
    • He has experience building big businesses
    • He has a fantastic work ethic
  • “Jocko and the Rock 2020…come on son”Joe Rogan

Additional Notes

  • People should look at race like the color of someone’s hair, it doesn’t matter
    • “Who you are is what’s important, that’s it” – Joe Rogan
      • In the SEAL teams, you don’t care what race someone is, as long as they have your back they’re good to go
  • Restaurants have about a 14% profit margin; big construction companies have a 4% profit margin
  • If someone tries to fight you, remember that you could always run away
  • Jocko believes BJJ is going to rise because parents are worried about CTE from combat sports that involve hits to the head
    • Joe wishes schools taught kids BJJ because it would teach kids self-defense and help stop bullying
  • If you’re going to do BJJ, you need to strengthen your neck
  • Jocko is a huge fan of surfing: It clears his mind and he gets to interact with nature.
    • It’s also humbling and a healthy workout
  • If you need some motivation, watch Jocko’s Good video
  • You need to experience failure in life and remember the pain of it so that you’re motivated to keep going the next time around
    • “Feel that sting so that when it comes up again, you’re like not today bitch. Not today. I’ve been here before, keep going.” – Joe Rogan
  • Archery is an art form just like martial arts
