UFOs, Portal Podcast Reboot, & 2022 Predictions | Eric Weinstein on Into the Impossible with Brian Keating

Key Takeaways

  • The goal of the Galileo Project is to make the search for UFO’s transparent and scientific (empirical inquiry) and use their data
  • Why is all extraterrestrial investigation associated with sci-fi tv shows and “Tin Foil Hatters”?
    • The science community should be open-minded and work towards destigmatizing the UFO/UAP topics
    • “My life is not so dull that I need aliens to liven it up.”Eric Weinstein
  • Degraded state – an ethos that pervades the public sphere characterized by snark and meme-making
    • The same situation is happening with the hot topics of psychedelic research (their healing potential) and the discussion about pornography (sexual liberation or a dangerous hobby?)
  • Why is it that theoretical physicists suddenly don’t have time to research their colleague’s work?
    • Eric believes it has to do with responsibility; to claim that someone’s theory is interesting, has good points, or that you don’t understand it is a claim of responsibility
    • Not everyone is willing to risk their reputation so instead, they attack people’s reputations in other ways
  • Anti-collegial people have no place in academia, “…they are too costly and they don’t contribute.”Eric Weinstein
  • The calculation of inflation does not belong only to economists
    • Just like today virology doesn’t belong solely to virologists but it belongs to all of us
  • Eric’s goal is to establish a more meaningful connection with a small number of people (one of the reasons why he wants to reboot the Portal podcast)
    • “I like the idea of having a large audience, but you should only be famous to about 3,000 well-chosen people.”Eric Weinstein

Intro

  • Eric Weinstein (@EricRWeinstein) is a mathematician, economist, investor, managing director of Thiel Capital, and host of The Portal Podcast
  • Eric Weinstein joins Brian Keating to talk about his recent involvement in the Project Galileo, the need to destigmatize extraterrestrial investigation, and the danger of anti-collegiality in academic circles
  • Host – Brian Keating (@DrBrianKeating)

Eric and Project Galileo Investigating UFO/UAP

  • Eric recently joined the research wing of the Galileo Project
    • It’s led by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb
  • Their purpose is not only bound to search for extraterrestrial life but any evidence of advanced civilizations
    • High-resolution images via multiple detectors
    • In-depth research on interstellar objects
    • Search for ETC satellites
    • They want to make the search for UFO’s transparent and scientific (empirical inquiry), use their data
  • How to battle the social stigma and cultural preferences?
    • Growing up, Eric was not a UFO enthusiast, nor a fan of sci-fi
    • This changed after some of his colleagues and friends started taking the topic more seriously
    • However, there is no denying the nutty folk in the UFO community: “I don’t want to respond to crazy people who say: ‘Hey, I’m bending spoons in my garage’ and ‘I’ve been abducted and you have to check all of my claims.'”Eric Weinstein
  • They want to figure out what’s happening; There may be less than meets the eye (a military cover-up or a random atmospheric phenomenon) but at least they will have a valid explanation and their data

“The Truth Is Out There”

  • The Pentagon released a UFO/UAP report compiling what they know about recent unidentified aerial phenomena
    • It’s mostly inconclusive, but it’s the most concrete government report of UAP ever made public.
  • Why we are not taking this more seriously?
    • Why is all extraterrestrial investigation associated with sci-fi tv shows and “Tin Foil Hatters”?
    • Eric believes the science community should be open-minded and work towards destigmatizing the UFO/UAP topics
    • “My life is not so dull that I need aliens to liven it up.”Eric Weinstein
  • There is great potential but people are completely ignoring the opportunity
    • Degraded state – an ethos that pervades the public sphere characterized by snark and meme-making
    • The same situation is happening with the hot topics of psychedelic research (their healing potential) and the discussion about pornography (sexual liberation or a dangerous hobby?)

What’s Up With All the Theories of Everything?

  • “I think we should give a Nobel prize to a person who doesn’t come up with a theory of everything.”Brian Keating
    • They are all attempts to guess about the fundamental structure of the universe, but nobody is listening anymore
    • Peter Woit‘s theory of everything – Eric likes the idea, but more importantly, took the time to read it and takes it seriously
    • It takes an hour and a half to understand what and why he is doing which is not a lot of time to invest and support your fellow scientist
  • On the Lex Fridman podcast, Peter Woit said he doesn’t know enough about Eric’s theory to comment on it
  • Brian is an experimental physicist, and he wonders why is it that theoretical physicists suddenly don’t have time to research their colleagues work
    • Eric believes it has to do with responsibility; to claim that someone’s theory is interesting, has good points, or that you don’t understand it is a claim of responsibility
    • And not everyone is willing to risk their reputation so instead, they attack people’s reputations in other ways
    • The goal of academics is to get people beyond attacking and towards collaborating
  • The other underlying problem according to Eric is that the scientific community stopped believing in itself
    • “We don’t believe there will be an Einstein in a post office, or a Galileo threatened by a pope.”Eric Weinstein

Anti-collegiality in Academia

  • If you don’t have collegiality and go for “kill shots” (to ruin someone’s reputation) you have no place in academia
  • The RNA Tie Club – a scientific club of select physicists and biologists dedicated to the understanding of DNA
    • All the great names like George Gamow, Richard Feynman, Edward Teller, etc. were working together and sharing ideas (they knew there was enough for everyone)
    • More than half of them were awarded medallions for their research and collaboration
  • Anti-collegial people have no place in academia, “…they are too costly and they don’t contribute.”Eric Weinstein
    • Eric believes they have abandoned their culture in favor of gossip, hostility, and PWNings

Inflation and Economic Imperialism

  • The calculation of inflation does not belong only to economists
    • Just like today virology doesn’t belong solely to virologists but it belongs to all of us
    • If you understand calculus and linear algebra you can understand inflation
  • Eric believes economists don’t understand Ambrose–Singer theorem
    • Economic imperialism- economists have been entering all sorts of fields (they said they are the only science, they are mathematical)
    • They’ve gambled the entire calculation of inflation on the work of Walter Erwin Diewert
    • And he doesn’t understand that the Walsh multi-period circularity test is negated by Ambrose–Singer holonomy
  • “The more discretion economists have, the more we are in danger of having our rates of inflation dialed up and dialed down to values that are convenient.”Eric Weinstein

Should Eric Revive the Portal?

  • Brian asked Eric about who he thinks are the most interesting people to invite for a podcast episode
    • Eric said he contacted Mark Ptashne, a molecular biologist specializing in gene regulation
    • He is remarkable, honest, and brutal in defense of science
    • We need more people like Ptashne on the podcast circuit (independent funding, unafraid to speak their mind)
    • People who are taking the risk to do something positive
    • The podcast circuit hosts the same people over and over again
  • Don’t waste time on interpersonal celebrity nonsense when you can spend it on things that can save us
    • Eric’s goal is to establish a more meaningful connection with a small number of people
  • Human connection and restoration of the scientific process
    • Talk about speculation and instantiations, test instantiations with data and theory from the experiment to reach a conclusion
    • That is one of the reasons why he wants to reboot the portal podcast
    • He wants to figure out what he did wrong, how to find the right people
  • “I like the idea of having a large audience, but you should only be famous to about 3000 well-chosen people.”Eric Weinstein
