Rick Rubin (T: @RickRubin, IG: @RickRubin) is a legendary music producer who has worked with everyone from Kanye West, Eminem, and Jay Z to Linkin Park, Adele, and Lady Gaga. This episode was recorded inside his famed Shangri-La Recording Studio in Malibu, California.

Key Takeaways

  • In music and art, it’s okay to not know why something works
    • “In music, we don’t set the intention of what we want to make. We just know we want it to be good and we’re open to the process….It’s more of just an open, automatic writing process where we’re trying to tap into our subconscious and letting the ideas coming through.”
      • It’s like the science of why the song works follows the art
  • How does Rick ground himself and solve problems?
    • “Something happens when we distract ourselves with a task that allows us to access a part of our brain that otherwise is engaged or otherwise hard to access”
      • “I find that if I’m looking for the answer to a problem, instead of sitting and thinking about it, I may go for a swim”
    • He loves spending time in nature, swimming in the ocean (he lives in Malibu), and being barefoot as often as possible
  • Rick’s Meditation Practice
    • He’s tried a bunch of things, but he always gravitates back towards Transcendental Meditation (TM)
    • While walking on the beach or swimming, Rick will often practice Metta meditation – he repeats the four metta phrases, twice each:
      • “May I be filled with loving kindness, may I be filled with loving kindness”
      • “May I be well, may I be well”
      • “May I be peaceful and at ease, may I be peaceful and at ease”
      • “May I be happy, may I be happy”
    • “I think any opportunity to meditate is good. There’s no bad version of meditation, and your meditation can never be too short…if you decide to do a three breath meditation, great.”
    • “An ice bath is very much a forced meditation. I don’t know anyone who gets in the ice and is thinking about anything else.”
  • Rick’s Diet
    • Rick lost 130 POUNDS by switching to a diet high in protein and low in carbs
    • He now tries to eat a mix of paleo/keto
    • He also intermittent fasts every day, only eating in the window of 12-8 PM
  • BIohacking and Fitness
    •  Before sleep every night, Rick:
      • Uses a Vielight (it’s intranasal red light)
        • Dave and Rick don’t really dive into why, but it’s thought that it relaxes your brain
      • Uses a Fisher Wallace Stimulator (it’s cerebral electrical stimulation)
        • The device uses gentle brain stimulation to help produce serotonin and other brain chemicals that alleviate anxiety, depression, and insomnia – it shifts the brain waves to a calm state
      • Wears blue light blocking glasses (use the code “PodcastNotes10” for 10% off at checkout)
      • Uses a traditional sauna or his SaunaSpace near-infrared sauna
    • He uses an Oura Ring
      • Purchase a ring using our link for a $50 discount applied at checkout
    • Rick occasionally boosts his dose of red light with a Joovv
      • He says he only has red lights in his house
    • Rick loves doing underwater pool workouts with Laird Hamilton (with weights)
    • Rick actually did an experiment a while back, only drinking deuterium-depleted water
      • Why? – This is getting deeper into the biohacking side of things (perhaps too deep), but deuterium, found in water, can inhibit your mitochondrial function
        • But deuterium depleted water is much too expensive to drink regularly
    • He’s also uses things like carbogen and hyperbaric oxygen in the past
      • Carbogen involves deep breathing a specific mix of carbon dioxide and oxygen without nitrogen for 10-15 minutes at a time. This allows more oxygen to cross the blood-brain barrier than you would get breathing room air, for brain repair and maintenance
  • Rick also has a prayer practice, which he tries to do before meals
    • It’s not traditional “prayer” to a God, but more so to the universe as a whole
      •  “It’s more like an agreement to be a humble servant of the universe and have each step be for the highest good for all”
        • So a prayer might sound like – “I am your vehicle, please guide me for the highest good”
  • How does Rick handle failure?
    • “I always try to think that everything we do is an experiment….that way, the stakes are very low for everything. It’s all an experiment and we’re just on Earth to play.”
