Reflecting on The Group’s Recent Hunting Trip
Jocko killed his first bull on a recent hunting trip
Hunting trips are a lot like military deployments – you get a bunch of tools and are sent out to a remote place on a mission to kill something
Hunting your meal is different than going out to eat because you have to put in the effort to earn your food
People that don’t hunt won’t understand it until they give it a try
When hunting, be aware of wind direction – even if an animal can’t see you, they’ll run away if they catch your scent
If you want to become great at something, you certainly need a lot of practice, but you also need the right mentors to guide you
Although not everyone can have a personal mentor, these days every expert is on YouTube or Instagram sharing their expertise – watch their content and learn from them for free!
“You’re giving the information away… the fact that you guys are giving this information out as broadly as you possibly can, that’s unbelievable… You’re opening the door to millions of people that listen to you and can follow you.” -Jocko Willink
The information is there, you just need to put in the effort!
You can’t master bowhunting, but you can master archery
There are just too many variables in bowhunting (wind direction, sun, nature, etc.)
Because of this, bowhunting can be extremely frustrating, but also very rewarding
When Joe first got into archery, he had trouble hitting a still target 20 feet away from him. 5 years later, he’s become a skilled bowhunter and can keep up with experts like Cameron Hanes and John Dudley.
How Joe Rogan Writes Jokes
Joe writes pages and pages of nonsense just to find a few good jokes
Out of 800 words, there might be one sentence that has the potential to be turned into a joke
Then he’ll smoke a joint and try to look at that sentence from a few different perspectives
If he sees something in it, he’ll expand on it. If it still sucks, he’ll start over again the next day with more written content.
Often times, the origin for one of Joe’s comedy bits will start with a note on his phone
Why? – Jokes often come out of nowhere and he wants to write it down before he forgets
“You want to farm ideas? You have to show up every day at the crack of dawn and be out there.” – Joe Rogan
If you want to do something, you have to make time to do it – Whether it be writing jokes, practicing archery, etc.
The only way to cut through the learning curve is to gain knowledge from established experts in the field
Tips For Going Through BUD/S & Hell Week
(BUD/S Training = Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training)
You’re going to be cold, wet, and sandy – get used to it and grind through the suck
Lots of people in BUD/S say their life-long dream is to be a SEAL, but about 15 people quit the very first day!
As a BUD/S instructor, Andy found that people with a big world mindset quit more often than those with a small world mindset
Big world mindset: It’s Monday and there’s five more days in Hell Week
Small world mindset: It’s Monday, let’s just get through today
“The ones who I could not get to quit were the ones who would say, ‘I don’t care how far away I am from my goal, I just care about the next step I have to take.’” -Andy Stumpf
In other words, break down large goals into smaller ones and pursue each small goal one at a time
The Navy has to feed you every 6 hours so just know the suffering won’t last longer than that
If 6 hours is too much, just focus on getting past one evolution at a time
Some people are born with more mental toughness than others, but everyone can learn to be tougher
Always stay tough: Jocko hurt his leg during the group’s recent hunting trip. When someone asked if he was okay, he replied – “Good to go.”
One of the reasons Jocko authored several kid books was because he didn’t like the books on the market that were making kids weaker instead of stronger
“Win or learn” – Jocko Willink
You don’t get a reward for going to train BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) after a long day of work, but you do get better – that itself is a reward
