Sleep Special: Hardcore Hibernation & Biohacking the Bedroom with Todd Youngblood – The Life Stylist Podcast

Check out The Life Stylist Podcast Episode Page & Show Notes

Key Takeaways

  • The best biohack in the world is a good night of sleep
  • If your body temperature doesn’t drop, you can’t fall asleep
  • Mattress are a heat sink – this results in our body temperature rising throughout the night (when it should be going down)
  • Easy ways to drop your body temperature to help you fall asleep:
    • Take a hot shower prior to bed – this warms your body up and as soon as you get out it starts cooling
    • Use a chiliPAD
  • You want to be as cold as possible while sleeping, but without shivering
    • When you shiver, you wake up
  • Stop using electric blankets – they have a huge EMF load
  • At one foot away from the electronic component of the chiliPAD (the part that heats/cools the water), there’s no EMF signature (AKA there’s no discernible distance between the environment EMF and the product EMF)

Products Mentioned

  • Todd is the creator of the chiliPAD Sleep System, a mattress topper that circulates temperature-controlled water (varying between 55-110 °F) , allowing you to optimize your sleep environment
    • Todd and his wife are also the creators of the EZ-Bed
  • Luke supplements with Qualia for cognitive enhancement
  • Measure your sleep quality with an Oura Ring
    • Purchase a ring using the above link for $40 off
  • Luke is saving up to buy a SAMINA Bed
  • Luke loves his Sonos speaker
    • But the downside is that it has a high EMF load
  • Sleep tips you might find useful:

Intro

The Background

  • Todd’s uncle invented the waterbed 50 years ago
  • Todd and his wife are also the creators of the EZ-Bed
  • People began sleeping on “mattresses” in the 1800s

The Benefits of Good Sleep

  • “You know you have great sleep when you wake up and feel like you can CRUSH IT”
  • “When you have amazing sleep, it means you start your day in an amazing place”
  • “If you can kick ass at your sleep, you can kick ass at everything else you do” – Luke

The Origins of the chiliPAD

  • Back in 2004, Todd kept sweating throughout the night, causing his sheets and pillow to get soaked
    • “It’s crazy that you can change everything else about a bed, the elevation, the firmness, everything…. but the temperature”
    • 3 years later the chiliPAD was born
  • In 2012, the product took off after many Olympic athletes began using it

The Science of Temperature and Sleep

  • The coldest part of any day is around 4 AM
  • When your body temperature starts to drop, you begin to feel sleepy
    • “Insomnia is partially defined by a delayed body heat reduction. If your body temperature doesn’t drop, you can’t fall asleep.”
      • Think about evolutionarily, we evolved to sit around fires after the sun went down (this heated our bodies up and as soon as we left the fire our bodies started to cool)
  • One tip to help your body temperature drop prior to bed:
    • Take a hot bath/shower – this warms your body up and as soon as you get out it starts cooling
  • “The thermal energy in mattresses is staggering”
    • Over the past 30 years, mattresses have gone from a fairly hollow inner spring with minimal fabric/foam on top to bricks of foam
    • Mattress are a heat sink – “If you were to take a thermal camera and examine a side profile of that mattress, you’d see it slowly heat up throughout the night”
      • This results in our body temperature rising throughout the night (when it should be going down)
      • And as our body gives off heat, it heats the space around us
  • When you sleep in a colder environment, the amount of deep sleep you get increases

The Best Mattress Materials

  • Latex is good
    • It doesn’t absorb heat like a memory foam mattress
  • Wool and organic cotton mattress are also good
  • Know that thicker mattress aren’t better
    • “There’s no reason anyone needs a 16-inch thick mattress, it’s just garbage. You can sleep fantastic on a 6-inch mattress.”

Temperature Fluctuation

  • Even if we live somewhere we’re exposed to the different seasons, we cut ourselves off
    • “We live in a temperature controlled world” – Humans live at a constant 68-75 °F
  • “Keeping your body conditioned to temperature ranges is really valuable”
    • Yet another benefit to saunas/ice baths
    • “One of the most powerful biohacks is not becoming totally domesticated and not living life at 68-70 °F… that’s not how we’ve evolved and it makes you weak” – Luke
  • Ever watch someone get into an ice bath for the first time?
    • “We’re so disconnected from our own evolution… we’re biologically wired to be resilient” – Luke
    • If you can get in an ice bath and not hyperventilate, that parking ticket, or that hard conversation you’re facing, it’s all much easier to tolerate because your nervous system is adapted to threat

Sleep and Temperature – Part 2

  • People who frequently work out/are active throughout the day tend to be very hot when they go to bed
    • Pro athletes fit this bill
  • You want to be as cold as possible while sleeping, but without shivering
    • When you shiver, you wake up

Stress & Sleep

  • When you go to sleep in a stressed state, it’s like you’re locking in the damage of that day
    • For this reason, it’s highly effective to take a few minutes to meditate or do a brain dump (through journaling) before bed
    • If you’re fighting with your partner, it’s best to solve it prior to bed

STOP USING ELECTRIC BLANKETS (and the dangers of EMFs)

  • “Anyone who’s using an electric blanket, you’re literally taking years off your life. They cause cancer, they catch fire, they’re a terrible product.”
    • It’s like your sleeping under a power line – they emit a huge electromagnetic field load (EMF) load
  • As background:
    • The chiliPAD mattress pad is made solely of silicon tubes and water (so it doesn’t give off EMFs)
    • At one foot away from the electronic component of the chiliPAD (the part that heats/cools the water), there’s no EMF signature (AKA there’s no discernible distance between the environment EMF and the product EMF)
      • The cable from the pad to the heater/cooler unit is very long, so you can easily put it 1 foot + away from you

The Technology of the chiliPAD

  • The chiliPAD mattress pad circulates water at a temperature of your choosing (between 55-110 °F)
    • How? – Temperature-controlled water flows through the medical grade silicon tubes of the mattress pad. The water is heated/cooled using thermoelectric technology.
  • How loud is the system?
    • About as loud as a desktop computer fan
  • Chili Technology just launched the OOLER Sleep System
    • It’s similar to the chiliPAD except it allows users to, using an app, set the temperature to adjust throughout the night goes on as you see fit

Wrapping Up

  • “I feel like what really makes the world go round is the human and family side of things.”
  • “When you deal with struggle, there’s always a path out”
  • Todd brings up a remarkable stat – 1/12 teenagers go off to college with a suicide plan
  • Todd is a huge fan of David Nurse

Additional Notes

  • Luke is saving up to buy a SAMINA Bed
    • When a partner on one side of a SAMINA moves, it has ZERO effect on the other side of the bed
    • To learn more about the bed, check out Luke’s podcast with Claus Pummer
    • Luke also created a YouTube video about the bed
  • Vinyl is a very topic substance (specifically the gases it gives off)
  • Measure your sleep quality with an Oura Ring
    • Purchase a ring using the above link for $40 off
  • Luke supplements with Qualia for cognitive enhancement
  • Luke keeps his chiliPAD at 66 degrees °F
  • Sleep tips you might find useful:
  • Luke loves his Sonos speaker
    • But the downside is that it has a high EMF load (each speaker gives off its own Wi-Fi signal)
      • “Any Wi-Fi enable devices in your house are like having an extra router [in terms of EMFs]”
