Intro

  • Host – Luke Storey
  • These lightning round interviews were recorded at the 6th Annual Bulletproof Upgrade Labs Biohacking Conference. Included are chats with:

What myth of misconception in the health industry bothers you most?

  • Marie
    • People have lost touch with the ability to listen to their own bodies and instead blindly follow diet trends
      • If you eat something your body doesn’t like, it’ll let you know through some sort of physical symptom (inflammation, upset stomach etc.) – so pay attention
      • Your own body is the best indicator of whether or not a diet is right for you
  • Crosby
    • Alkaline water (aka hydrogen-rich water) isn’t something you should be drinking all the time (but on occasion – it can reduce inflammation, increase cognitive function, and return the body to a state of homeostasis)
      • Alkaline water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water. Because of this, some advocates believe it can neutralize the acid in your body. Normal drinking water generally has a neutral pH of 7. Alkaline water typically has a pH of 8 or 9.
    • Why shouldn’t you drink it all the time? – It’ll neutralize your stomach acid, making it more difficult to digest food
    • Spring water is only slightly alkaline
  • Daniel
    • The over-use of psychedelics
      • They’re certainly useful in moderation, but you need to be careful with continuous use (and taking them in the wrong setting)
  • Michael
    • The popularity of psychedelic “shamans”
      • You need to be careful – many of the people claiming to be experienced psychedelic shamans are quite the opposite
  • Anthony
    • There’s a ton of charlatans out there – be careful who you take health advice from
  • Troy
    • “Young or older trainers on steroids or hormone replacement therapy trying to sell you their programs or ideologies”

What are the 3 most toxic items present in every home?

  • Marie
    • Cleaning supplies – many of which contain carcinogens
      • Ex. – Clorox
    • Tap water – it’s filled with harmful, unfiltered compounds like chlorine and fluoride
      • Definitely start filtering your tap water
      • You should also use a shower filter – your skin is like a mouth, it readily absorbs what it comes in contact with
    • Noise from appliances, cars, and the TV
      • “Noise is one of the biggest disturbers of our sleep, rest, and ability to go inward”
      • It’s polluting our inner spaces
  • Crosby
    • Shampoos and conditioners – they have tons of toxins
    • Mold – especially if you live in an older apartment building
    • Cookware
      • “I think a lot of people are using the wrong cookware and leeching heavy metals into their food on a regular basis”
      • But one thing’s for sure – you definitely shouldn’t be using a Teflon-coated (non-stick) pan
        • In addition to wearing down and leeching into your food over time, the Teflon actually vaporizes when exposed to heat and is very harmful to breath in
      • You should be using ceramic cookware this pan comes highly recommended
  • Daniel
    • Tap water (because of the fluoride)
    • Cleaning supplies
    • Most GMO/non-organic food
  • Michael
    • Mold is more of an epidemic than we realize”
      • It’s estimated 100 million homes in the U.S. are contaminated with mold
    • Tap water – it’s filled with harmful chemicals and even pharmaceuticals
    • Toxins that originate from our carpets and furniture
  • Anthony
    • Wi-Fi – due tot he EMFs (Anthony unplugs his Wi-Fi every night before bed)
    • Tap water
    • Air quality
  • Troy
    • Fragrances (they’re filled with neurotoxins)

      • It destroys the gut microbiome
    • Mold in older buildings

      • How does it work? – It essentially returns your body to a state of homeostasis
        • “If you’re in that state as much as possible, it’s really hard for disease to come and have a life”

How do you handle negative emotions that come up in your day to day life?

    • You first have to acknowledge you’re having a negative emotion and not suppress it
    • It then comes down to acceptance and expressing the emotion in a healthy way
    • But ultimately, you want to release the emotion – “Our bodies are like repositories. When we have negative emotions that we don’t express, we store them and they become stress, tension, and pain. Release and let them go.”
  • Crosby
    • Crosby is a huge proponent of breath work exercises
      • “Our negative emotions and how we deal with them have a lot to deal with our breathing”
  • Daniel
    • Instead of trying to push the negative emotions away, listen and learn from them

Additional Notes

  • “The diets we think are bad today were good even a couple of years ago. Who’s to say the diet you think is the best won’t soon be proven to be unhealthy?” – Marie
  • Crosby and Luke are huge fans of MassZymes Digestive Enzymes
    • “There’s something really amazing and reactive happening when I take 2-3 enzymes with a meal that’s dense in protein”
    • As we get older, our enzymes get depleted
      • Why does this matter? – Food, if not digested properly, just sits in the stomach and creates bad bacteria before it’s ready to be pooped out the next day
