Key Takeaways

  • The Joovv is a light therapy device which gives off red and near-infrared wavelengths of light
  • Red and near-infrared wavelengths of light help your cells become more efficient at producing energy
    • This results in a laundry list of benefits – hair regrowth, muscle recovery, weight loss, better skin, enhanced cognitive function, reduced symptoms of depression, enhanced cell signaling, enhanced clearing of metabolic waste, as well as increases in testosterone for men and increases in estrogen for women
  • Americans are spending more time indoors than ever before and because of this, not getting adequate exposure to red light (which not only comes from a Joovv, but also the sun)
  • What’s the difference between red vs. near-infrared light
    • Most of the energy in red light is absorbed in the skin and good for superficial tissue treatment
    • Near-infrared light can penetrate very deep (even through bone) and is good for deep tissue treatment
  • One of the best things you can do for your health is to get outside more and expose yourself to the sun

Intro

  • What’s Joovv? (Twitter, Instagram, Website)
    • A company that makes full-body red light therapy and photobiomodulation devices designed for consumer use
  • Scott Nelson is the co-founder of Joovv
    • Check out the Podcast Notes from his appearance on the HVMN Podcast
  • Wes Pfiffner (who’s also Scott’s brother-in-law) is the Director of Business Development for Joovv

What are the benefits of red and near-infrared light therapy?

  • In science world, red light therapy is referred to as photobiomodulation
  • Red and near-infrared wavelengths of light help your cells become more efficient at producing energy
    • This results in a laundry list of benefits – hair regrowth, muscle recovery, weight loss, better skin, enhanced cognitive function, and reduced symptoms related to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
      • (Wes and Scott joke how this sounds like a late night TV commercial…but the science is true!)
  • Blood work has shown that using the Joovv daily for 60 days results in an increase of testosterone in men
  • Quite a few people report red and near-infrared light help aid symptoms of seasonal depressive disorder/general depressive symptoms
    • (Especially with people suffering from traumatic brain injuries)

The Problem With Modern Life

  • Americans are spending the majority of their time (93%) indoors
    • 87% in an office building and 6% in a car
    • That leaves 7% for time outdoors to experience sunlight exposure – this is such a drastic change from our ancestors
  • And inside – people are exposed pretty much solely to artificial blue light from smartphones, TVs, laptops, etc.
    • Blue light is never present in nature (aka sunlight) without the presence of red light
      • (So we’re getting an extreme imbalance of light)
  • Why all the benefits listed above?
    • “Once you just get some healthy [red] light into your lifestyle, it does some profound things for the body”
  • Our ancestors didn’t sit inside for 23 hours a day and bust their ass for an hour in the gym and call it a good day
    • We’re meant to have lots of low-level activity outside, like walking, with intermittent bursts of high energy (like a hard run)
  • No wonder America has so many health challenges – it’s considered normal to sit behind a desk under artificial light for 40 years

Red vs. Infrared Light

  • Light is measured and classified by the size of it’s waves – typically in nanometers (nm)
    • The therapeutic window of light ranges from 600-900 nm (which includes red and near-infrared light)
  • Near-infrared light is invisible to the human eye
    • It doesn’t deliver much heat, but it has a unique ability to affect the mitochondria in our cells (same with red light)
    • For comparison – an infrared sauna delivers mostly mid and far-infrared to heat the body
  • The biggest difference between red and near-infrared is really just the depth of penetration
    • Most of the energy in red light is absorbed in the skin and good for superficial tissue treatment
    • Near-infrared light can penetrate very deep (even through bone) and is good for deep tissue treatment
      • It does everything from enhancing brain function to reducing joint pain/inflammation to speeding up muscle recovery
      • (This is why near-infrared light has been shown to affect the brain in a positive way – resulting in cognitive enhancements in the treatment of TBIs)
  • There’s even some research being done to determine the effects of near-infrared light on mitigating symptoms associated Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia
    • Post-red light therapy CT scans show a reduction in amyloid plaques in the brain (which are related to cognitive decline)

Let’s Dig Into the Science

  • Red and near-infrared wavelengths of light have a unique affinity towards cytochrome c-oxidase (CCO- an enzyme involved in cellular respiration)
    • On a simple level – this results in the cells become more efficient in their energy production
  • What are some more downstream effects of this?
    • Enhanced clearing of metabolic waste
    • Enhanced cell signaling
    • Enhanced gene transcription

The Microbiome

  • Recent research out of Sydney recently documented that near-infrared light has the ability to produce a healthier gut microbiome

The Future of Joovv

  • One clinical study recently got under way looking at the synergy effects of red light therapy and a ketogenic diet
    • Red and near-infrared light have been shown to deplete the deuterium in your cellular water (thus changing the viscosity), resulting in enhanced functioning
      • Deuterium is a heavy hydrogen isotope abundant in our bodies and the environment which slows down the electron transport chain
    • A ketogenic diet also naturally lower deuterium levels
  • Joovv is also evaluating hormonal health changes from red light therapy
    • Specifically the ratio of testosterone/estrogen in men and the estrogen /progesterone ratio in women

Wrapping Up

  • Optimal sunlight exposure is an important factor for health
  • Be more cognizant of how much blue/red light you’re getting on a daily basis
    • You might not need a Joovv – just get outside more (even 10 minutes makes a difference)

Additional Notes

  • Blue light exposure (from screens( in the evening is very disruptive to your circadian rhythm and can result in a negative impact on your sleep
  • “Light is really important to overall health and it’s often underappreciated”
    • “We all need light, period. We’re not meant to be indoors at all day long.” – Kyle
  • Many athletes report that using the Joovv at night provides a bit of a calming effect and helps them get into a parasympathetic (relaxed) state
  • Red and infrared light therapy is NOT a biohack – we evolved to NEED these wavelengths of life and in the modern age we’re starved for them
  • Kyle got his blood work checked with WellnessFX prior to beginning to use the Joov in order to monitor how a variety of markers changed after a few months of use
  • It’s been shown that 500+ genes are switched on/off based on our sunlight exposure
  • Kyle is a huge fan of Onnit’s Alpha Brain nootropric
    • “It’s fucking amazing. It’s one of my favorite products.”
